RTO is the cost nobody puts a number on
A cash-on-delivery order that comes back costs you forward freight, return freight, packaging, and often the product. At a 20% COD RTO rate, that can be the difference between a profitable month and a loss, and it is spread across courier invoices nobody reads.
RTO is also easy to underestimate. Returns arrive a week or more after deliveries, so last week always looks better than it will end up. Gran measures RTO only on orders that have finished.

The terms, defined
- RTO (return to origin)
- RTO is an order that is shipped but not delivered and returns to the seller, most often a refused or unreachable cash-on-delivery order.
- NDR (non-delivery report)
- An NDR is a courier’s report that a delivery attempt failed, with a reason such as customer unavailable, address incomplete or order refused.
- COD remittance
- COD remittance is the transfer of cash collected on delivery from the courier or aggregator to the brand, usually in batches after a fixed number of days.
- First-attempt delivery rate
- First-attempt delivery rate is the share of delivered shipments that were delivered on the courier’s first attempt.
- COD to prepaid conversion
- COD to prepaid conversion is the practice of moving customers who would pay cash on delivery to paying online, usually with a small incentive.
- AWB (air waybill number)
- An AWB is the tracking number a courier assigns to a shipment, used to track it, reconcile charges and match COD remittance.
Questions
Which couriers does Gran work with?
Any courier whose tracking number reaches Shopify, which is nearly all of them. Live status comes from Shiprocket, Delhivery, NimbusPost, iThink Logistics, Shipway and ClickPost accounts; charges and remittance come from any courier’s invoice or MIS file.
Does Gran book or cancel shipments?
No. Every courier connection is read-only. Gran reads status, charges and remittance; it never creates, edits or cancels a shipment.
Why is my RTO higher in Gran than in my courier panel?
Usually because Gran counts only finished shipments and measures recent periods on older, settled orders. Courier panels often divide returns by all shipments, including the ones still moving, which makes the rate look lower than it will end up.
Is this only for India?
RTO, COD and Indian couriers are where it is strongest. Delivery speed and shipping cost work for any market where tracking numbers reach Shopify.
