Light but bulky parcels are charged as if they were heavy. Most Indian couriers divide length × breadth × height in centimetres by 5,000 to get volumetric weight in kilograms.
Right-sizing boxes is one of the cheapest ways to cut freight. It also reduces weight discrepancy disputes, which arise when the courier measures a different size from the one you declared.
Formula
Volumetric weight (kg) = Length × Breadth × Height (cm) ÷ 5,000
Example
A 30 × 20 × 15 cm box has a volumetric weight of 9,000 ÷ 5,000 = 1.8 kg, even if it weighs 600 g.
